Necropsy: Anesthesia

Tricaine methanesulfonate (MS- 222) is a widely- used enesthetic for fish. Other names include TMS; 3- aminobenzoic acid ethyl esther; ethyl m- amino- benzoate; and TS-222 Sandoz. This white crystalline powder is soluble to 11% in water to form a clear, colorless acid solution. It is a derivative of benzocaine with an additional sufonate radical rendering it more soluble and more acidic than its parent compound.
