Necropsy: Remove Testis

In a sexually mature fish, the gonads are often the most conspicuous internal organ. Note the large white testes in this animal. In a healthy, immature specimen, the largest visceral organ in the abdominal cavity is usually the liver.

Retract the testis from the posterior, and cut through the mesenteric attachments. The gonadal artery in this movie is easily observed.Gonads may not be readily observable in sexually immature specimens. If gonads are observed, note color, size and stage of development. Make several slices through the organ and select a representative 3-4 mm thick section to preserve.
