Necropsy: Remove Spleen

Dissect the spleenfree from the messentary. Note its color, and examine the edges of the organ, which should be sharp. A swollen or round spleen should be cultured for bacteria. Cut or slice the spleen into 2-4 mm slices, and choose a representative piece for histology.

Unlike the mammalian spleen, the white pulp in fish is not prominent, unless active. Sometimes the spleen may be embedded in peritoneal fat and difficult to see.
