Prior to sedation observe the animal's behavir, its ability to maintain itself in the water, and its respiration rate. Is the animal having trouble respiring? Has the animal been "flashing" or rubbing itself on the side of the tank? once the fish is sedated, carefully observe the entire external surface including all sense organs.
